NAGALAND
One of the smallest states of
India, Nagaland is a rather remote territory known for their former
head-hunting. The Naga tribes were fiercely self-sufficient, with no
need of continental governments. They strongly defended themselves from
plundering cultures by living as jungle nomads, attacking outsiders when least
expected. Classical Naga necklaces, worn by tribal men and women, often consist
of numerous beaded strands of a wide variety of materials, including
semi-precious stones, metal castings, and carved bones. For them, body
adornment is an indicator of social status and is tightly interwoven with
self-identification.
